A History of the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney

In 1971, the Indonesian Trade Centre was opened by Bapak Dalindra Aman at 25 Kent Road, Rose Bay, NSW 2029.

During the same year, the trade centre moved to a rented space in Martin Plaza due to an increasing workload and need for more staff. The office function changed to become the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney, with Bapak Dalindra as Consul.

During 1972, the Indonesian Consulate General rented an office space at 5 Bridge Street, Sydney. Because of further increased workload and the need for even more staff, the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney changed its status and became the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney. Bapak Dalindra Aman was named the first Consul General in Sydney, and served in this position until 1974.

From 1974 until 1979, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney (KJRI) remained at 5 Bridge Street, Sydney, with the position of Consul General succeeded by Bapak Rasyidin Rasyid Sutan Raja Mas from 1975-1979, and by Bapak Dick Latumahina from 1979-1981.

In 1980, KJRI moved from Bridge Street to Pitt Street (Piccadilly Court), Sydney, renting an office space until 1985.

In 1985 and during the incumbency of Bapak Dahlan, an ex-squash facility was purchased at 236-238 Maroubra Road, Maroubra, NSW 2035. Gradually, the building was renovated and then become the representative office of KJRI. These renovations were undertaken year by year, because the available funds were not enough for a complete and immediate renovation.

With the increased co-operation between both Indonesia and Australia, as well as with the Indonesian community living in Australia, building upgrades therefore continue and substantial funding is still required.
